  Most images on BasinLandRecords.com are standard Group IV TIFF Images or can be converted to PDF format using an All Pages PDF link. To test your computer to make sure it can view these images, click the View Test Image links below. This will open the image directly or will download it to your downloads folder.

Issues with Windows Photo Viewer
Windows 7 and later comes with Windows Photo Viewer which can be used to view TIFF images on BasinLandRecords.com. The following describes issues with Windows Photo Viewer.

Viewing single page documents
When you click on the individual page links in BasinLandRecords.com (page 1, page 2, etc) the image is downloaded to your computer's "Download" folder with an extension that matches the page number. So, for page 1, the extension would be .001. To view the image, you can right click on the .001 document and select "Open With" and select Windows Photo Viewer or another TIFF Image Viewer. This establishes an association on your computer so it knows that the Windows Photo Viewer should be used to open .001 documents. The same will work for other single page images (.002, .003 etc).

Printing single page documents
After view a single page image as described above, if you try to print it with Windows Photo Viewer, you may get the message:

Windows can't find this picture. Check the location, then try again.

The Windows Photo Viewer has trouble printing a TIFF image that does not have a .TIF extension. To resolve this issue, before opening the document, change the extension to .TIF.

Printed TIFF images are landscape instead of portrait
If you print a TIFF image with Windows Photo Viewer and it is printing in landscape mode, then you will need to change the printer properties to portrait mode as follows:

  1. After clicking Print, click the Options link.
  2. Select Printer Properties
  3. Click on the preview image to flip it to Portrait. This setting will probably be saved as the default.

Apple Quicktime Issues
If you have installed Quicktime, it automatically sets itself as the viewer for TIFF images, but will have trouble viewing standard TIFF images. To resolve this, you must perform one of the following (depending on your version of Quicktime):

Remove Quicktime's association to image files (available on later version of Quicktime):

  1. Go to Start - Control Panel.
  2. Double click the Quicktime icon (if you do not have this icon, you will have to perform the Quicktime uninstall as described below).
  3. In the top drop down box, select File Type Associations.
  4. Click the File Types button.
  5. Click the plus sign beside Images - Still image files.
  6. Clear the TIFF image file box.
  7. Click Apply and OK.
  8. In the top drop down box, select Browser Plug-In.
  9. Click the Mime Type Settings button.
  10. Click the plus sign beside Images - Still image files.
  11. Clear the TIFF image file box.
  12. Click Apply and OK, then exit.
  13. Exit your browser window and then go back in and Quicktime should no longer be the default application for TIFF image files.

Quicktime Uninstall/Reinstall procedure:

  1. Uninstall Quicktime.
  2. Reinstall Quicktime (you may want to download the latest version).
  3. During the installation process, find the screen where you can uncheck TIFF images as a type of image Quicktime can view.
